Restaurant commission calculator

Work out what delivery-app commission costs you in a year, and what the same orders would cost taken directly - including the delivery you would have to cover yourself.

Your numbers

In your own currency. The arithmetic is the same everywhere.
Your own driver or a courier. Set it to 0 if those orders become collection.
Webkio charges 2% on Starter, 1% on Growth Business and Agency.
Your own payment provider's rate.

Why the delivery cost is a field and not a footnote

Most versions of this calculation compare a commission rate against a card fee and declare a large saving. That is only true for collection. A delivery order taken on your own site still has to reach the customer, and paying a driver is a real cost that replaces part of what the marketplace was doing.

At a low average order value it can consume most of the difference. That is worth knowing before you print flyers, and it is why the sharpest version of this move is usually collection first: those orders carry no fulfilment cost at all, so the whole commission is saved.

The worked example above, in full

Marketplace orders a month250
Average order value26
Order value per year78,000
Commission at 25.0%19,500
20.0% moved direct (600 orders)15,600
Fees at 2.0% + 2.0%, plus 3 per delivery2,424
Kept per year1,476

Set the delivery cost to zero, as it would be for collection, and the same orders keep considerably more. That single input is the whole strategy.

What to do with the number

Questions

What commission do delivery apps charge restaurants?

Delivery orders commonly sit between 20 and 35 percent of the order value, with lower rates where the restaurant handles its own delivery or the customer collects. Use the rate on your own statements rather than a headline figure, because the effective rate after promotions and service fees is often higher.

Is taking orders directly actually cheaper?

It depends almost entirely on how the food reaches the customer. Collection orders taken direct are dramatically cheaper. Delivery orders you fulfil yourself replace a commission with a driver cost, and at a low average order value that can consume most of the difference.

What does Webkio charge on a direct order?

A transaction fee of 2 percent on the Starter plan and 1 percent on Growth Business and Agency, on top of your own card processing rate and the plan subscription. Online ordering requires a paid plan.

Should I leave the delivery apps entirely?

Rarely, and this tool is not an argument for it. The apps are a discovery channel that reaches people who have never heard of you. The opportunity is converting repeat customers, who already know your name, to a channel that does not charge a quarter of every order.

How do I get regulars to order direct?

Print the address on the packaging, put a card in every delivery bag, and make the direct price or portion visibly better. The customers worth moving are the ones ordering from you weekly, and they are the cheapest to reach because they already have your food in front of them.
