PrestaShop is a serious open-source commerce platform: you download it, host it, and shape it however you like. That freedom is real, and so is the work it comes with - a server to keep patched, modules to keep compatible, and usually somebody who knows PHP when an upgrade goes sideways. Webkio is the other trade: less to shape, nothing to maintain, and the shop, the site, the bookings and the email in one place. This page is about running PrestaShop yourself, which is what most shops on it do; if somebody manages it for you, the hosting and patching points here are already handled and the rest still applies.

The verdict

Pick Webkio if the shop is part of a business that also books, quotes or publishes, and nobody there wants to be a sysadmin. Pick PrestaShop if the catalogue or the customisation is the business, and you have the developer to match.

What each one costs

PrestaShop itself is free to download. What it costs in practice is hosting, the modules you need, and whoever keeps it upright - which is why two shops on the same platform can have very different bills. Webkio is one monthly plan with a percentage of online sales and no per-module fees; the plans and the rates are on the pricing page.

What moving involves

This one is not a click. The import rebuilds PAGES - your words, images, logo and contact details - at the addresses they already have, and it does not carry a product catalogue across as products: those are rows in your PrestaShop database, not text on a page. A small shop is usually quicker to re-enter than to migrate; a large one is a project, and we would rather say so here than after you have moved.

When to choose them instead

PrestaShop is the better choice when the catalogue is big and the rules are yours: thousands of products, several languages and currencies, warehouse or ERP integrations, pricing logic nobody else implements, or a design agency already on retainer. It is open source, so you can read and change any line of it, host it where you like and leave whenever you want, carrying the database with you. If that control is the reason you chose it, nothing here is an argument against staying.

Frequently asked questions

For a small business selling a manageable catalogue, yes - particularly when the website, the bookings and the email matter as much as the shop. For a large catalogue with custom pricing rules and an agency behind it, PrestaShop is the better tool and we would rather you kept it.

The pages the import rebuilds keep the addresses they already have, so the site around your shop carries its links and search results across. Product pages are generated by PrestaShop from its own database, so those particular addresses end with the old store: list the handful that actually earn traffic and point them at their new equivalents, rather than trying to preserve a catalogue of them.

We do, and you will not be asked. On a self-hosted PrestaShop the PHP version, the security patches, the backups and the module compatibility after an upgrade are yours - which is fine with somebody technical on hand and a problem without.

The ability to change anything. It is open source: with a developer you can bend it to any workflow, integrate any warehouse system and self-host anywhere. Here you get what is in the product, which is the trade a managed platform always makes.

No. Pages, prices, products and opening hours are edited by clicking them, and there is nothing to install, patch or keep compatible. If you want custom code there is a place for it, but the normal path does not need one.
