How much does a nonprofit website cost?

A nonprofit asks what a website costs with a budget line that has to be defended to a board. The answer worth taking to that board is the fee on gifts you pay now versus the plan you would pay instead.

Prices read from the plans on every load; the judgement reviewed 8 November 2026.

Nonprofit & Charity - a nonprofit website design included in every plan

One of the nonprofit designs the plan price includes.

The short answer

A nonprofit website has to run on its own domain, take donations into your own account and send receipts and thank-yous automatically. Priced three ways:

RouteWhat you payWhat you get
A builder with it built in
Webkio
$14.99 a month
Starter at $14.99; $179.88 a year
The site and the features in one plan, edited by you, live the same day. Card processing is extra on every route.
A freelancer from $1,158 to $2,316 as a floor
3 to 6 days at $386 a day, derived below
Somebody's week. Then hosting, and an invoice for every change.
An agency No published figure
three quotes, and the questions below
A team and a process. Right for a group with unusual needs; rarely for one location.

The table assumes no money is taken through the site itself, so no percentage applies. If you do take payments on it, put the monthly amount in the calculator and the plan and fee recompute.

Year one, on a builder

What the first twelve months come to for a nonprofit that builds it itself, at the assumption above.

Your time to set it upan afternoon with the words and photos ready

Which route fits a nonprofit

A builder, if

You are a small charity, church or shelter that wants donations on its own site, with receipts sent for you and staff who can edit the pages.

A freelancer, if

You have a specific campaign site in mind and a grant that covers a build, accepting changes cost money after.

An agency, if

You are a national organisation with a communications team and compliance requirements of your own.

What moves the price for a nonprofit

Taking donations on the site

A donate button that leaves the site is free and costs a fee per gift to somebody else. Donations into your own account, with receipts, is the paid line, and its fee is lower than a shop's.

Monthly giving

Recurring donations need a payment account that supports subscriptions. Built into the donations feature; a line item on a custom build.

Volunteers and events

Signup forms and an events page. Standard on a builder; hours on a custom build.

The words, which nobody can supply for you

The real cost of a nonprofit site is somebody's time to write what the money did. No builder or developer can supply it.

The costs that are not on the quote

  • Donation platform fees. Third-party donate pages take a percentage of each gift plus the card fee, and keep the donor's details. Compare their percentage with the plan's donation fee.
  • Card fees. On every gift, taken by the processor; some processors offer nonprofit rates, worth asking for.
  • The news page nobody updates. A nonprofit site with news from two years ago tells donors you stopped. Budget an hour a month.

What a nonprofit can skip

Money commonly spent on this kind of site that does not need spending.

  • A third-party donate page with its own percentage; donations into your own account cost the plan's lower fee.
  • A volunteer to build it in a tool only they understand; a site your staff can edit outlives the volunteer.
  • A redesign before the content exists; one page that says what the money did does more than a new look.

Free things worth doing first

  • Write one sentence per amount: what 10, 25, 50 does. It is the best fundraising copy you will ever write and costs nothing.
  • Put the registration number, who runs it, and where the money goes on one page.
  • Count last year's gifts and the fee you paid on them; it is the number to compare the plan against.

If you ask an agency

Agencies do not publish prices and we will not guess one. Ask each of three what is included and what is billed after, who owns the domain and the content, what a change costs after launch, what hosting and maintenance are per year, and whether you can edit the site yourself.

Where the freelancer floor comes from. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median web developer wage at $92,650 a year (Occupational Outlook Handbook), $386 a day over 240 working days. A freelancer charges more than a salaried day, so 3 to 6 days at that rate is a floor, not an estimate.

Guides for a nonprofit deciding this

Questions

Is there a free plan for charities?

The free plan publishes the site; taking donations on it needs Starter, and the fee per donation on Webkio is lower than the fee on sales. There is no separate charity discount.

Do donations go into our own account?

Yes, straight into your own Stripe account, with the receipt and thank-you sent automatically.

Can we take monthly donations?

Yes, and the form can offer monthly first, which is where small nonprofits' reliable income comes from.

Is a volunteer-built site cheaper?

Until the volunteer leaves. A builder your staff can edit is the cheaper option over three years, which is the horizon that matters.
